Programs that are staffed by specialists who have expertise in the treatment of women who have dysfunctions that affect the pelvic floor, i.e., muscles, ligaments, connective tissue, and nerves that help support and control the rectum, uterus, vagina, and bladder. The pelvic floor can be damaged by childbirth, repeated heavy lifting, chronic disease or surgery. Specific problems may include bladder and bowel incontinence, prolapse (descent of pelvic organs; a bulge and/or pressure; or dropped uterus, bladder, vagina or rectum), difficulty urinating or moving the bowels, discomfort, burning or other uncomfortable pelvic symptoms, including bladder or urethral pain or overactive bladder.
